Like many animated series, Bob’s Burgers puts a running gag into the show’s introduction. This comes in the form of the storefront next to Bob’s Burgers. This landlord can’t catch a break. A new business comes in every week.
Today we are going to go over all of the references found in the next door gag from Bob’s Burgers season one. Enjoy!
Every Bob’s Burgers Season 1 Storefront Gag Explained
P.F.E.T.A.
Episode: Season 1, Episode 1 – “Human Flesh”
This storefront gag is most likely referring to the animal rights activist group P.E.T.A. (People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals). This introduction store also has a sign taped to the window that says “Meat Is Murder”. This business has its work cut out for them since they decided to move in next door to a burger joint.
Trot’s All-Natural Fertilizer
Episode: Season 1, Episode 2 – “Crawl Space”
How natural are we talking here? I have a feeling that Trot is making this fertilizer themselves. I don’t know how they can manage to keep the inventory in stock, but I also don’t think I want to know. Also, ‘the trots’ is another term for having diarrhea.
Rent Reduced: Crime Scene Special
Episode: Season 1, Episode 3 – “Sacred Cow”
This technically isn’t a storefront. It looks like building ower is desperately in need of clients after a crime took place in the previous store. As far as we know, the previous store was Trot’s All-Natural Fertilizer. I don’t want to get into that theory.
Meth I Can! Methadone Clinic
Episode: Season 1, Episode 4 – “Sexy Dance Fighting”
‘Meth I Can!’ is a play on words for the motivational saying of ‘Yes I Can!’ Hopefully, the patients stay motivated to get the help they need.
Synthesizers! Synthesizers! Synthesizers!
Episode: Season 1, Episode 5 – “Hamburger Dinner Theatre”
I bet Gene was super excited to have this shop next door to his home. If there is one thing Gene loves, it’s synthesizers.
Extra Moist Yoga
Episode: Season 1, Episode 6 – “Sheesh! Cab, Bob?”
Hot Yoga has been a trend for the past decade or so. Can ‘extra moist Yoga’ compete and become the new trend? I sure hope not. People tend to hate the word ‘moist’, so I can see why this business didn’t last long.
The Horse Renderer
Episode: Season 1, Episode 7 – “Bed and Breakfast”
This store is a reference to the 1998 drama film ‘The Horse Whisperer’. The movie stars Robert Redford, Scarlett Johansson, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Ty Hillman. The Horse Whisperer is about a woman who takes her daughter to a special ranch after her horse is injured. A man nicknamed The Horse Whisperer helps the horse’s recovery and helps the mother through a crisis of identity.
Attempted Crepe French Cooking School
Episode: Season 1, Episode 8 – “Art Crawl”
This is a fairly edgy joke for a show that is on regular TV. Whoever owns this cooking school has a sick sense of humor. This store is a play on words for the crime of ‘attempted rape’.
STD B-Gone! Free Clinic
Episode: Season 1, Episode 9 – “Spaghetti Western and Meatballs”
Who would actually go to this free clinic? I mean just entering the building says a lot about your behavior. This store also plays with the concept of “B-Gone” which is often seen on products like pesticides.
Rocky Refuge: Racoon Sanctuary
Episode: Season 1, Episode 10 – “Burger War”
Many of these storefront gags are homages to classic songs. This is most likely a reference to the Beatles’ song ‘Rocky Raccoon’.
Bass Drum Emporium
Episode: Season 1, Episode 11 – “Weekend At Mort’s”
This storefront has a hilarious sign that says ‘The Only 24 Hour Drum Shop In Town!’ Bob probably did not get much sleep with that store next door.
Magnum G.I. Colonoscopies
Episode: Season 1, Episode 12 – “Lobsterfest”
Honestly, if I ran a medical scoping practice, I would probably give it a funny name too. The name of this store is a reference to the classic television series Magnum P.I.
Chris’s Brisses
Episode: Season 1, Episode 13 – “Torpedo”
Is Chris doing the circumcisions himself? Or is he helping you plan the bris event? We may never know.
