Locksmith’s 2019 Freestyle On Shade 45
Locksmith is a hip hop artist from Richmond, California. He is known for his hyper-lyricism and conscious lyrics. In my opinion, he is one of the most slept-on emcees in recent history. I first heard of Locksmith in 2018 when No Question, his collaboration album with Apollo Brown, was released. I have been a fan ever since.
I then found out that Locksmith has quite a presence on YouTube. One of my favorite Locksmith videos is his 2019 appearance on Shade 45. His freestyle performance is one of my all-time favorite hip hop videos.
Locksmith just breathes flames for minutes on end without stopping. Most rappers would faint from this. The breath control alone is enough to leave anyone impressed. However, what makes this performance special is the insane wordplay and social consciousness in Locksmith’s lyrics. With that said, it’s Locksmith. We don’t expect anything less from him.
In this freestyle, Locksmith goes after a lot of villains in the music industry. This includes phony mainstream rappers, racist executives, and money-hungry record labels. This is underground hip hop at its finest.
