An Interview With Michael Levitt
This week I got to chat with burnout expert Michael Levitt of the Breakfast Leadership Network. I hope you enjoy our conversation as much as we did!
Aaron Iara: Thank you for taking the time to chat with me this week! Please tell the readers about yourself and the work you do.
Michael Levitt: Hi, I’m Michael Levitt and I’m the founder Chief Burnout Officer of The Breakfast Leadership Network, a San Diego and Toronto-based burnout media firm. I’m an in-person and Certified Virtual Speaker, a Certified NLP, and CBT Therapist, and I’m one of the world’s leading authorities in burnout recovery and prevention.
I’m a Fortune 500 consultant, #1 bestselling author, and host of the Breakfast Leadership Show, a top 200 podcast on iTunes. I’m also a 2x Top 20 Global Thought Leader on Culture with Thinkers360. I’m a former Healthcare executive, CIO, and CFO overseeing $2 Billion budgets, so I’ve almost seen and done it all.
Aaron Iara: How long have you been helping professionals with burnout? How did you get your start?
Michael Levitt: I launched my organization in 2016, after suffering from my own burnout story back in 2009/10. After rebuilding my life after significant burnout and loss, I made it a mission to help others navigate around burnout.
Aaron Iara: Business and podcasting is often a collaborative process. How do you foster relationships and approach collaboration?
Michael Levitt: The best way I’ve found to collaborate is to be in the arenas where like-minded people hang out. For my business, LinkedIn has been amazing to connect with the people that either helps me and/or help connections of mine. The guests I’ve had on my show are absolutely amazing and generous with helping me and others.
What are your biggest obstacles when it comes to helping others be successful? How do you overcome them?
Michael Levitt: Convincing others that they are in control of their lives, and can make the necessary adjustments to make their lives easier. Often burned-out people think they are beyond help, which is completely not true.
Aaron Iara: Running a business takes a lot of time and energy. What do you do to stay productive?
Michael Levitt: I have themes for each workday. I group tasks that are similar to those days and schedule Thursdays and Fridays as overflow days or for last-minute crucial meetings.
Aaron Iara: Outside of your business, what do you do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?
Michael Levitt: I love to read, watch sports (becoming a huge soccer fan, since most of the US-based sports are still off due to the pandemic), and I’m fortunate enough to live near a nature trail, so I go for a walk every morning to re-connect with nature, and get away from technology.
Aaron Iara: Do you ever get any performance anxiety when releasing work or doing talks? How do you overcome it?
Michael Levitt: Nervous energy and anxiety are similar in nature, so when I get anxious about speaking at an event, I make a mind shift to being excited to speak at that event. It’s subtle but it’s been a game-changer for me.
Aaron Iara: What advice can you give to those who want to start their own business?
Michael Levitt: Plan for the long run. You won’t likely be an overnight success quickly. Figure out who your ideal client is, and really focus on who that group is, and narrow your focus to help them how they need and want to be helped. You can’t serve everyone, no matter how “awesome” your product/service is.
Aaron Iara: Do you have any upcoming releases, events, or projects you would like to discuss?
Michael Levitt: Great interviews coming up on the Breakfast Leadership Show, and my new book on Burnout will be coming out in the Fall of 2020.
Aaron Iara: Thank you for taking the time to do this! Where can the readers find your work?
Michael Levitt: BreakfastLeadership.com and @BfastLeadership is my social media handle. For a free bucket list template, they can go to BreakfastLeadership.com/bucket
