10 Cloverfield Lane is the second film in J.J. Abram’s Cloverfield franchise and is set in an underground bunker in rural North America where the owner of the bunker has somehow managed to survive the events depicted in the first Cloverfield film.
John Goodman plays the owner of the cabin and comes across as an obsessive end of the world conspiracy junkie and doomsday prepper who will do anything to keep his two guests captive. Unfortunately, at the end of the film he’s proven to be right about the “aliens.”

1. Cloverfield (2008)
Directed by Matt Reeves and written by Drew Goddard, Cloverfield stars Lizzy Caplan, Jessica Lucas, T.J. Miller, Michael Stahl-David, Mike Vogel and Odette Yustman. It was released in the year 2008.
Cloverfield is a science fiction found footage monster film which starts at a birthday party and quickly descends into mayhem as kaiju sized monsters invade New York City. It’s shot from the perspective of main character Rob’s friend Hudson who is asked to film Rob’s birthday party and follows their friends as they try to escape New York and stay alive.
2. Bird Box (2018)
Directed by Susanne Bier and written by Eric Heisserer, Bird Box stars Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Danielle Macdonald, Rosa Salazar, Sarah Paulson, Jacki Weaver and John Malkovich. It was released in the year 2018.
Bird Box is a post apocalyptic film where panic, chaos and mass suicides break out across America and Europe. Those who survive realise they need to keep their eyes blindfolded while they’re outside. Eventually the film reveals these entities that have invaded the earth are making everyone act this way and begin to stalk the surviving group of Sandra Bullock’s character, Mallorie, and her friends.
3. A Quiet Place (2018)
Directed and written by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place stars John Krasinski and Emily Blunt. It was released in the year 2018.
A Quiet Place tells the story of a society that has fallen due to the emergence of deadly monsters that hunt using sound and are hypersensitive to sound. So a family must adapt to silence in order to survive this monster-filled post apocalyptic world.
4. World War Z (2013)
Directed by Marc Forster and written by Damon Lindelof, Matthew Michael Carnahan, and Drew Goddard, World War Z stars Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, James Badge Dale, and Daniella Kertesz. It was released in the year 2013.
World War Z follows the world as it’s filling with zombies and Brad Port’s character Gerry Lane finds himself searching for the origin of the contamination.
5. Ex Machina (2015)
Directed and written by Alex Garland, Ex Machina stars Domhnall Gleeson, Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac. It was released in the year 2014.
Ex Machina is a isolated science fiction film about a reclusive millionaire who invites one of his employees to witness his prized invention; a beautiful android. An android who is gradually becoming sentient and will do anything to escape her prison.
6. The Road (2009)
Directed by John Hillcoat and written by Joe Penhall, The Road is a post apocalyptic movie starring Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Molly Parker and Garret Dillahunt. It was released in the year 2009.
The Road is a tale of survival in which a man and his son do everything they can to survive a long and treacherous wasteland. One in which all plant and animal life has been wiped out, making their struggle for survival even more difficult.
7. Hush (2016)
Directed and co-written by Mike Flanagan, Hush is a home invasion horror film starring John Gallagher Jr., Michael Trucco and Kate Siegel. It was released in the year 2016.
Hush follows Kate Siegel’s character, a deaf woman, who struggles to survive against a killer who is trying to get inside her home. She uses all sorts of inventive ways to fend off her attacker but ultimately it’s her disability which is the difference maker against the home invader.
8. Skinamarink (2022)
Directed and written by Kyle Edward Ball, Skinamarink is an obscure horror film starring Lucas Paul, Dali Rose Tetreault, Ross Paul and Jaime Hill. It was released in the year 2022.
Skinamarink is a creepy budget conscious horror film where two kids wake up at night to discover that they cannot find their father, and that the windows, doors, and other objects in their house are disappearing. It’s a nightmare through the eyes of two terrified children.
9. The Purge (2013)
The Purge is directed by James DeMonaco and written by James DeMonaco. It stars Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Adelaide Kane, and Max Burkholder. The film was released in the year 2018.
In this alternate version of the United States, all crime is legal one night of every year. In the first installment of the series, a family must protect themselves from the looters, rioters, and murderers lurking the streets.
10. The Mist (2007)
Directed and written by Frank Darabont, The Mist stars Laurie Holden, Thomas Jane, and Toby Jones. It was released in the year 2007.
Based on the Stephen King novella of the same name, The Mist follows a group of people who are trapped inside a grocery store as a mist fills their town. They cannot leave as the mist is hiding deadly creatures who have a hankering for some human meat.
11. Glorious (2022)
Directed by Rebekah McKendry and written by Joshua Hull and David Ian McKendry, Glorious stars starring Ryan Kwanten and J. K. Simmons. It was released in the year 2022.
Glorious is about a broken and heartbroken man who ends up locked in a public restroom and beside him in a nearby stall is a mysterious voice who warns of an apocalypse of galactic proportions. This is one film that takes the cosmic horror stylings of H.P. Lovecraft to a whole new level and throws in some black comedy and satire to match.
12. I Am Legend (2007)
Directed by Francis Lawrence and written by Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman, I Am Legend stars Will Smith, Alice Braga, Charlie Tahan, and Dash Mihok. It was released in the year 2007.
I Am Legend follows Neville, the only immune human in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by disease, who enjoys the company of his dog and playing a round of golf to pass the time. Though he may believe he is the last man on Earth, he eventually comes across other survivors, and tries to stay away from other carnivorous creatures inhabiting the area. Creatures who screams will created by Faith No More and Mr Bungle frontman Mike Patton.
13. 28 Days Later (2003)
Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Days Later stars Megan Burns, Cillian Murphy, Naomi Harris, and Brendan Gleeson. It was released in the year 2003.
In 28 Days Later a deadly virus is spreading through the world, turning its victims into mindless violent zombie-like creatures. This is what the world looks like twenty-eight days after the outbreak (in England).
14. The Happening (2008)
Directed and written by M. Night Shyamalan, The Happening stars Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel, John Leguizamo and Ashlyn Sanchez. It was released in the year 2008.
In The Happening an airborne illness is creating violent havoc in America. Elliot and Alma are trying to stay safe and figure out the source of this contagion while trying to keep their family safe.
15. The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Directed by Julius Onah, The Cloverfield Paradox stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Daniel Brühl, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi. It was released in the year 2018.
One of the great science fiction movies like Interstellar, The Cloverfield Paradox is part of the Cloverfield franchise and functions as a prequel of sorts. As it introduces to an earth running out of power and an outer space science experiment by way of a particle accelerator which is designed to create limitless energy for the earth to use. Instead, it opens up portals to multiple parallel dimensions which allows for alien horrors to come through. Alien horrors which we saw in the original Cloverfield film.
16. The Maze Runner (2014)
Directed by Wes Ball, The Maze Runner stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Will Poulter, and Patricia Clarkson. It was released in the year 2014.
Maze Runner is a dystopian science fiction film about a group of young men trapped in a maze and their struggle to get out alive. On the way they are faced with numerous obstacles like the maze itself rotating it’s routes and genetically engineered monsters. Because of all the running, by the time you’ve finished watching it you’ll feel like you’ve done two hours of cardio. Cardio sucks!
17. Color Out of Space (2019)
Directed and co-written by Richard Stanley, Color Out of Space is a sci-fi horror starring Nicolas Cage, Joely Richardson, Elliot Knight, Madeleine Arthur, Q’orianka Kilcher and Tommy Chong. It was released in the year 2019.
Color Out of Space is based on H.P. Lovecraft’s short story of the same name, in which a meteorite crash lands onto a farm and the effects of meteorite begins to have catastrophic consequences for the Gardner family. Consequences that will change them and bring about an apocalyptic end.
