Nacho Libre Costume And Cosplay Guide

About Nacho Libre

Nacho Libre is a 2006 family comedy film starring Jack Black. He plays a monk who decides to chase his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. The film was written and directed by Jared and Jerusha Hess, the same people that created the cult classic Napoleon Dynamite. Nacho Libre was produced by Nickelodeon Movies and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Today, I want to go over how to make your own Nacho Libre costume. If we missed anything, let us know on social media!

How To Make A Nacho Libre Costume

There are three main pieces to a Nacho Libre Costume: the red cape, the red and blue wrestling tights, and red wrestling boots. While this costume is simple, it can be difficult to get the look right. Any costume where you need multiple pieces in the same color can cause some accuracy issues.

The Red Cape

There are plenty of red capes available for purchase. With superheroes being all the rage, there is no shortage of red capes available for purchase. Most are in the $8-$20 range. Here are a few of our favorites available on Amazon:

The Tights

There are three parts to this aspect of the Nacho Libre costume. You have the red trunks/briefs over the leggings, the leggings themself, and the red knee patches. For the knee patches, I suggest getting a small amount of red cloth and sewing them on yourselves.

For the trunks, the easiest method is to get tight red briefs underwear or Spandex/yoga shorts. I think Spandex works the best because a lot of briefs have company logos and different colored waistbands. Also, a lot of these have longer legs. However, Nacho Libre wears the classic ‘tighty whitey’ style of briefs. Here are a few options on Amazon:

For the tights, the hardest part is going to be getting that signature blue color. That said, I don’t think your friends will care if it is a few shades off. Here are a few options:

The Wrestling Boots

Nacho Libre’s signature red wrestling boots will probably be the most expensive part of this outfit. In my research, costume wrestling books and regular wrestling boots are about the same price. The closest I’ve seen on Amazon are the Title Speed-Flex Tall Boxing Shoes. You may want to check out some sporting goods stores or websites for a bigger variety.

Tips For Making Your Own Nacho Libre Costume

  • Try to make sure that the cape, briefs, and boots are as close to the same shade of red as possible.
  • Nacho Libre has white laces in his boots. Most red boxing shoes come with red laces. Grab a pair of white boot laces to add some accuracy.
  • Men’s tights can be hard to come by. Most homemade Nacho Libre costumes will use a combination of men’s and women’s clothing. Make sure you are sizing yourself correctly before making a purchase.
  • Make sure the tights you pick can hold up to having the knee pads sewn on them. You don’t want the knee pads to ruin the structural integrity of the tights and cause runs and rips.
