Silver Surfer Season 1, Episode 10: Recap
Surfer contemplates his lonely existence (which feels very self-inflicted given how many have wanted to stay with him so far, even if he doesn’t see it) on a planet of newly evolved sentience in some very cute creatures. A satellite or ship spies on him and sends a signal somewhere.
One of the creatures falls from a floating rock and Surfer swoops in to save it, only to discover they can all fly and all he’s done is be an interference. This only brings on more self loathing and angst. Thankfully it’s interrupted by an attack of more of the ships that end up capturing him in a laser web.
Surfer finds the laser webs built to withstand his Power Cosmic, and recognises the drone ships right before Gamora appears as a hologram before him. She introduces herself and reveals the plan to capture him for his role as a lackey of Galactus, as well as the alliance of races that all want the death of Galactus.
Surfer is taken aboard their main ship and the Wanderers are all very excited to have him. Lord Glenn reveals that Silver Surfer is on trial for everything he did as Herald of Galactus, and many are very eager to see him executed. Lord Glenn says he will have a fair hearing though, and Surfer states that he wants defense.
Surfer speaks with his apparent defense attorney, a Vergilian woman named Tor-Kay, while we see shots of scientists attempting to study and cut apart his board. Silver Surfer feels the pain of what happens to his board, which breaks their saw completely apart. Tor-Kay says she will defend him as she is devoted to justice, but instantly shows it won’t truly be a fair trial since she’d rather be his prosecutor.

So they leave him to await the death of the planet, which seems like a really ineffective way to execute somebody. Despite accepting his fate before, it seems he only did so because he thought he’d be safe as he now tries to find safety and a plan.
They must decide to make his death faster as they send drone ships to kill him, but they are terrible shots as he runs away. Gamora seems to have some doubts about the decision now that he’s trying to escape his judgement, though she denies it. The machine the Wanderers are using to draw power from the suns starts having some issues.
Surfer does more self-loathing even as he fights to survive. The twin suns start dying and so they are forced to try and turn off the energy drain to avoid the suns exploding, but find they can’t and might have killed everyone. Surfer struggles between saving everyone or letting himself die, but he decides on the former and uses one of the guns to shut off the energy drain and then summons his board.
The Wanderers almost die in a black hole, but Surfer turns it into a plasma jump to somewhere else and so saves those who condemned him. Gamora starts to question a lot of things, and Surfer pats himself on the back for saving his enemies before taking off.
Silver Surfer Season 1, Episode 10: Review
May not come as a surprise that I wasn’t particularly fond of this episode. This is just another one where Surfer spends most of his time moping and complaining about issues he has caused to himself. He constantly complains about being alone because of how he helped Galactus, and while it is true that many hate him for it (including those in the episode), he has come across so many damn characters that want to be around him at this point it is just frustrating.
I feel like we’ve seen this same point with him flogged to death at this point, every time he seems to get past it we end up back here and have to go through it again. It’s just not interesting at this stage.
On more positive thoughts, I did find this episode very well paced compared to many. It flows pretty well from start to end and, despite being a glorified legal episode, never really lags. It was also great to finally see some of what Surfer has been feeling guilty about. Certainly wish it had come much earlier, if so perhaps his constant angst would feel more justified because we had more context for why, but I’ll take later over never.
I did like the thematic take on vengeance causing more harm, especially vengeance paraded as justice. The Wanderers were so focused on making Surfer pay that they refused to see beyond it, to see how they may end up hurting themselves. I also really liked Tor-Kay’s inclusion as a character so devoted to justice that they will fully argue against their own feelings to ensure it is meted out fairly. Curious if we will see her again, and what role she could take if she does. Certainly hope we don’t see more Surfer on trial in the last few episodes.
