Silver Surfer Season 1, Episode 8
This time we open on Zenn-La, thankfully with Silver Surfer’s narration to assure us he’s only remembering it. We get to see some beautiful landscapes and some truly interesting creature and sentient alien designs as Surfer recaps what we already know about him and Zenn-La.
He breaks out of it and notes that it felt like a fever dream, which is not something he should have with Galactus’ power in him. He grows angry and Galactus again and decides to punch a space rock, for some reason, and realises that his body is weakened. He then starts feeling space itself and gets pummeled by space rocks as he floats about in a confused state.
He is only just rescued from being crushed inside a gravity well (which I assume to be a black hole) and finds his saviour is Nova, though he doesn’t recognise her as Frankie until she explains it to him. He’s also rather unconcerned by her new flaming body, though he does react when she reveals herself as Galactus’ new herald and that Surfer is needed to save the Devourer of Worlds, with just a touch of anger.
Surfer reluctantly agrees with the explanation that the that if Galactus perishes then so does anything that his Power Cosmic has touched, and that includes not only both Heralds but also Shalla-Bal. Nova catches up Surfer on ow she got his old job, and her nifty ‘end up where I need to be’ power, and leads him to Galactus’ ship, which is under attack by something known as harpy rasps (which are kinda tentacle, cyborg bat creatures).
Galactus isn’t looking so great with his skin taking a grey hue, yet refuses to accept any help from Surfer. Galactus then reveals that somewhere within his body is a rot that sickens him. Nova argues with Surfer to get his help, revealing to him that she only ever leads Galactus to worlds free of sentient life.
Nova reveals that everything was fine until Galactus started to feed on his latest planet meal. Galactus then has Surfer enter his body, on the promise that once he is saved Galactus will give all the knowledge he has of Zenn-La.
We then find Surfer evidently inside Galactus’ brain, which seems to be a bunch of open space filled with artificial looking tubes and orange liquid, Nova contacts Surfer via telepathy, to which he doesn’t respond until he is attacked by a bunch of Krangs from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (not really, but they sure look like him). The fleshy creatures drag Surfer into the liquid as he calls out for help and Galactus freaks out before passing out entirely.
Surfer escapes and reveals the creatures to be part of Galactus’ immune system. Nova uses some x-ray vision to help guide Surfer through Galactus’ body, leading him to the spinal cord and for some reason it is here that Surfer hears Galactus’ heartbeat slowing,
Surfer finds himself trapped and Galactus’ ship comes under attack by a small fleet. The fleet is led by Gamora and Lord Glenn, and it seems the harpy rasps are working with them, which seems an unnecessary detail.
Surfer continues his journey, doing is best to fight past Galactus’ immune system. Surfer makes it into the chest and Nova outside finds the Watcher, well, watching. Nova does a good enough job defending Galactus that it causes Gamora to pull back their forces.
Surfer comes across several golden glowing orbs that start speaking to him. The orbs reveal themselves to be the essence of the worlds Galactus has devoured, suggesting that all worlds are sentient themselves. He then meets a blue starfish with an eye and a woman’s voice.
Gamora renews her attack, and so does Nova. Surfer freaks out fighting the starfish, whose touch causes his skin to foam. The starfish reveals itself as a weapon against Galactus created long ago, by a race that lived before any of those currently in the galaxy, that calls itself the scourge of the universe.
Surfer convinces Galactus to trust him and is given a burst of Power Cosmic. It’s enough for Surfer to shrink the scourge into nothingness, and so he leaves Galactus’ body as the World Devourer awakens fully to cause Gamora and Lord Glenn’s forces to fully retreat.
Galactus then notes that his hunger is greater than before, and gets a real good chuckle out of it. Surfer does reveal that Galactus did actually fulfill his promise, only he has no idea where it is Zenn-La actually resides as he tossed it across the galaxy in anger (which sounds bad for Zenn-La).
Surfer then mentions to Nova that her power would allow them to find his homeworld, and so they take off together.
Silver Surfer Season 1, Episode 8: Review
This was an interesting episode. I wouldn’t say it was particularly memorable, or even one of the best, but it did do some interesting things. A journey through the body, even if it is of the gigantic and alien Galactus, is not something I would have been able to predict from the first episode. It is fun to see the series play with these kinds of ideas.
I did find the attack by Gamora and Lord Glenn upon Galactus’ ship, and Nova’s defence of him, to be a little lackluster. The animation was fine, but given how big it wanted the battle to be it just never quite felt like it lived up to itself. There just seemed to be some issues with the pacing and focus. It just didn’t hit me the way that it felt like it should have and I wanted it to.
As usual there were a few things that the show doesn’t explain quite as much as it could have. Namely what qualifies as being ‘touched’ by Galactus’ Power Cosmic, because it can be assumed it has touched a lot of things as he has traveled all over. Also whether the Power Cosmic within Surfer and Nova are also able to ‘touch’ things that would also then have been at risk. It also feels weird that Nova just takes off with Surfer at the end. Galactus was certainly hungry and would be wanting Nova available, but then she just takes off. I understand her motivation, just curious if this will have repercussions for her.
