We start with Silver Surfer and Nova seemingly enjoying flying through space together, and it really does just look like a nice chill time. Nova leads Surfer to a planet of molten lava and jets of flame, and we learn that Nova was showing Surfer what she can do by finding a young world full of energy and no life for Galactus to consume (and in the process making one of my issues in the last review completely moot).

We find out Nova summons Galactus by shooting a beam of energy through space, and we have to assume that it hopefully isn’t harmful or her talent for finding stuff also helps her ensure it misses everything in the path. Nova then ignores Surfer’s warnings about risking Galactus’ wrath aiding him and locates Zenn-La for him.

Nova leads him to Zenn-La, only they find it surrounded by metal mechanical orbs and Surfer finds it doesn’t look like Zenn-La at all. Nova touches an orb, which shocks her and then explodes. Surfer comments that they are pulsar mines used by the Skrull to prevent escapes from prison worlds. Despite Surfer’s certainty that this isn’t Zenn-La, Nova is convinced and heads down to the planet.

Some evidently powerful Skrull ships rock up and attack the duo. The ships manage to knock out Nova and Silver Surfer heads down into the planet’s atmosphere to save her, only for the ships to halt their attack. We hear a mysterious voice calling for the ships to back off in the name of someone known as the ‘Hive Mother’.

Nova crash lands on the planet, though rather gently really, and Surfer lands and comments, once again, that it can’t be Zenn-La. Nova is confused about her power failing, but then Surfer finds the ruins of what he once knew. He suspects they could be from his world, but they are then ambushed by Skrulls pretending to be pillars (of all things).

We are introduced to a Skrull named Nietre, who calls himself the caretaker. One of the Skrulls is attacked by a small reptilian creature Nietre calls a ‘mindless one’, and Nietre reveals they are on the Skrull nest world Skrullos (which would kinda be like Earth being called Humanos). Turns out Skrulls can only reproduce on Skrullos (seems like a big flaw for a space faring civilisation) and the ‘mindless ones’ are actually young Skrulls.

Nova isn’t impressed with how the Skrulls raise their young, comparing the Skrulls generally to frat boys. Nietre explains that young Skrulls are without logical thought until a special ceremony, then they return to the hive.

On a strange looking space station a Skrull named Zedrao informs a Skrull Prime Minister of the arrival of Surfer and Nova, and the Prime Minister is not happy about it. It seems these two are not fond of Nietre, but had to keep him around after they took over. They suspect Nietre is up to something so they decide to stop him.

Nietre leads our heroes to a nest of Skrull eggs, and reveals that Prime Minister Kiar and Admiral Zedrao are part of a cabal that took control, and eliminated the Hive Mother. It seems the queen was not happy with how they were going in the war with the Kree and planned to fire them, so they took over first and fired her from life. Though most Skrull do not know she is dead.

Without a Hive Mother the Skrull will go extinct, but thankfully they have a royal egg, Problem is they can’t hatch it if there’s a chance the cabal will learn and capture the new queen. So Nietre needs Surfer to take the egg somewhere safe to hatch so their people can rally behind them.

Surfer then reveals the universe is kinda racist against the Skrulls, and he’s pretty hesitant to get involved. The cabal’s forces attack and Surfer is shocked to see Skrull fight each other. Nova rescues Nietre and the royal egg and they escape, only to run into the fleet. The cabal’s troops used a gas designed to knock out anything and Nova drops Nietre and the egg.

Surfer reflects on how he’s a pacifist being asked to help the Skrulls (which is weird, given just before he notes Zenn-La taught no prejudice yet he calls them barbaric and questions if he can help them and still be ‘civilised’), all while he watches the royal egg fall back down to the planet. He does save the egg though, then drops it, then saves it again.

Kiar and Zedrao are excited to learn of the egg, seeing in it a way to both prevent the extinction they would have caused and maintain their power. Back on the planet Surfer and Nova talk about feeling better, Noa comments on her ‘maternal instincts’ and Surfer is thrown when she says he made a joke as he is certain Surfer doesn’t joke though Norrin Radd did, They suspect it could actually be Zenn-La, but one displaced from time (which would have a lot of ramifications if Zenn-La became the only lace Skrulls can reproduce).

A Skrull hatching takes a liking to Nova, even taking on a smaller version of her form, but it’s eagerness to stay with her causes her to be hit by the gas again. Nova decides it’s best to sacrifice herself for the egg, which causes Surfer no small amount of inner turmoil, but he still escapes.

Kiar visits Zedrao to see the egg, and is upset to find Nova instead. However, Zedrao points out they could weaponise her and use her to point Galactus at Kree controlled worlds. Surfer then appears and offers up a trade, the royal egg for Nova. They agree, and as Surfer and Nova fly away he reveals he transmuted a pulsar mine into the egg. They manage to eject it, but it causes all the mines to detonate.

Surfer wants to try to find Zenn-La again, only to get angry when Nova says she could only sense Skrullos when she tried. Surfer then says that he took the egg somewhere that will hopefully lead the Skrull down a gentler path and we see he left it with Kili (who talks to it in a rather creepy voice).

I really did quite enjoy this episode, though I am very fond of the Skrulls so I may have a bias. I just find this show works best when it lets us truly see the peoples of this galaxy, particularly through the eyes of Silver Surfer. This is also another episode that gives him a partner for his adventures, this time Nova which is fun, adding more fuel to my feeling that Silver Surfer, at least this version of him, works best with another character along to bounce off of. Though I’m not a huge fan of exactly how often Nova was rescued in this episode, which was a lot.

I will say that I’m a little surprised this episode was the first part of a story, as it very much felt like it should be (that it would have ended with Nova captured, and the next episode the rescue) yet it wasn’t. The fact it has such a quick wrap up of so many little ideas suggests to me that perhaps it was intended to be, but they were forced to cut it down (possibly due to the series being cancelled prematurely).

There’s a lot of interesting ideas tossed aside due to this that would have been great to see explored further (maybe some will, this episode did teach me to not assume an open question wouldn’t be answered later).

I really like the Skrull transformation animation, and they came up with some interesting designs for creatures that they turn into. The animation in general was pretty strong in this episode and it felt like they were able to show off a little bit. Given the different locations and space battles and everything else the only thing they didn’t get to include this episode was a crowd of different alien species. Nine episodes in and it still isn’t an animation style I find particularly appealing, but I do like getting to see what they can do.

Who are the Silver Surfer Voice Actors?

The voice actors who appear in this episode of Silver Surfer include:

  • Paul Essiembre as Norrin Radd /Silver Surfer
  • Tara Rosling as Nova
  • Bernard Behrens as Nietre
  • David Calderisi as Kiar
  • Michael Copeman as Maciag*
  • Elizabeth Hanna as Kili the Troll
  • James Blendick as Galactus

*Note- I do not recall a character named ‘Maciag’, though Copeman is credited as voicing him in this episode anywhere that mentions it. I also cannot find a voice actor for Zedrao. I doubt they are the same character, though possible. I more likely expect it to be that I simply missed this character and nobody kept track of Zedrao.
