SSSS.Dynazenon Episode 6 Review Pain Within Everyone

SSSS.Dynazenon Episode 6 Review

Warning: Spoilers Ahead!

The halfway point for SSSS.Dynazenon reaches both an emotional and narrative turn for the series.

SSSS.Dynazenon episode 6 is named “What is this pain?” It’s an appropriate title given how a majority of the Dynazenon team experience some kind of pain through the course of the episode. This leads to their hearts being heavy and them being unable to properly pilot the Dynazenon. You’d think this would be a spoiler but the bigger spoiler won’t be revealed. Needless to say, the last few minutes of the episode will leave your jaw on the floor.

As stated, each of the Dynazenon team members deals with some kind of trauma in their life. Picking up immediately after the last episode ended, Minami in her quest to learn more about her sister (Kano) gets thrown a curveball. Kano’s former classmate suggests it was suicide and not an accident. The former classmate even offers video evidence showing a prank Kano’s classmate pulled on her. As Minami watches it repeatedly she is unable to come to any type of conclusion. Did Kano’s classmates tease her to the point she committed suicide or was it all just good-natured fun? As the video plays out for the audience they are unable to make a conclusion themselves.

SSSS.Dynazenon Episode 6(2021)

Yomogi’s pain comes in a brief moment. He sees Sizumu talking with Minami and assumes she opened up about her pain. Yomogi is afraid Minami is growing closer to Sizumu while giving him the cold shoulder. It may seem like a tired trope but these characters are teenagers in High School. This is the type of thing characters in this situation would worry about. Yomogi is nursing a crush for Minami and the idea she is opening up to someone else makes him feel inferior.

Speaking of feeling inferior, it’s time to talk about Koyomi. While out with his former classmate Inamoto, her husband finally shows up. Of course, he is a good-looking guy who seems to have everything Koyomi doesn’t and makes the mistake of calling Koyomi by the wrong name. This leads Koyomi to feel terrible when he’s already intoxicated and ends up going drinking with Mujina (more on her later) of the Kaiju Eugenicists.

For half a second it seems like these two are starting to bond and a relationship may be between the two of them them. This idea goes astray fast as Mujina steals Dyna Striker making Koyomi feel even worse. Everyone dealing with their own level of pain results in the team having a less than successful time when they finally have to face off against the kaiju (which itself seems to be a tribute to the classic Ultraman kaiju Dodongo) for the episode.

This seems like an opportune time to look at the Kaiju Eugenicists, what we know about them so far, and what we can expect moving forward. The four members of the Kaiju Eugenicists Juuga, Onija, Sizumu, and Mujina have been revealed to have existed 5,000 years ago and were former comrades of Gauma. Juuga acts as the brains and leader of the team. Onija is the muscle and operates under the “punch first and ask questions never” way of thinking. Sizumu is the empathic and emotional one of the group being able to hear the voices of the kaiju and wishing to work towards a world the kaiju are needed.

This brings us to Mujina, who has so far been established as the female of the team. As she spends some time with the intoxicated Koyomi she admits she has nothing and wants nothing. Mujina admits she and Koyomi as a NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) have a lot in common. From this, it might be speculated whatever reason she joined the Kaiju Eugenicists 5,000 years ago has gone out the window. She has no idea what to do with herself after all this time and is simply going through the motions with her old team because it is all she knows. This and the brief connection to Koyomi seems like she may have a change of heart.

Unfortunately, as Koyomi tackles her to reclaim the Dyna Striker (an act she takes as an insult despite stealing the Dyna Striker from Koyomi) and aids Onija in controlling the kaiju (which is another way of paying tribute to the Ultra kaiju Dodongo as the original suit required two actors to operate), something changes. As she helps to focus the kaiju, increasing its destruction, and putting Dynazenon on the ropes she starts to feel alive. As if this level of destruction was what she had been missing the entire time.

SSSS.Dynazenon (2021)

This discovery by Mujina is basically the exact opposite of any type of positive growth. Instead of realizing being a part of the Kaiju Eugenicists has left her empty and led her down a fruitless path, she seems more on board with their mission. The extreme levels of destruction and carnage she experiences as she controls the kaiju was what she had been missing the entire time. Hopefully, this is not the end of her character arc and there will still be time for her to see a different future.

This is as much as there is to discuss the episode without going over the HUGE spoiler in the last few minutes of the episode. We’ll bring it up next week. So you have time to watch this episode because once the 7th episode review comes out, we’ll have to discuss what happened in great detail.
