Decluttering Checklist

Decluttering your home can be a huge task, especially if you have not done so in a while.

Getting rid of clutter can relieve a lot of stress and anxiety. We can work, rest, and play without having to sift through our possessions. It is easier to find items when we need them.

I have put together my ultimate list for decluttering your living space. This is the list that I use when I clean and organize my house. Use this list to declutter your house in an organized and efficient way.

Before You Go Room By Room

  • Remove all known trash from your house
  • Pull items out of cluttered drawers, cabinets, closets
  • Go through each room and move items to the correct room
  • Clean and dust areas you will be organizing
  • Empty the junk drawer!
  • Find a reasonable spot for your mail, bills, and paperwork
  • Keep in mind that there are some items you overlook because they have been there for so long
  • Get some small bins for organizing drawers and cabinets
  • Take your time, this can be a long process
  • Put on some music or podcasts that will help keep you focused
  • Keep in mind that it may look worse before it looks better

Room Decluttering

Living Room

  • Clear unneeded items off of the coffee table
  • Arrange and organize your television stand
  • Organize cords and cables for your electronics
  • Think about the amount and purpose of decorations
  • If you have kids or pets, designate a space for play and toys

Kitchen And Dining Room

  • Organize refrigerator and throw out expired items
  • Organize the top of the fridge
  • Check outside of the fridge for unused magnet or expired fliers/coupons
  • Organize pantry and throw out expired items
  • Remove unused gadgets and appliances
  • Keep a reasonable amount of cutlery, plates, and glasses
  • Organize drawers, cabinets
  • Stack and organize pots and pans, Tupperware, and dry goods
  • Clear the countertop as much as possible
  • Revisit trash and recycling bin placement
  • Organize cleaning products


  • Organize medicine cabinet and safely disposed of expired goods
  • Organize shelving, vanity, and cabinets
  • Remove unused bottles and items from the bathtub
  • Remove unused towels and clothes
  • Organize cleaning products


  • Removed unused and out of season clothing and shoes
  • Reduce clutter on the tops of bedside tables and dressers
  • Keep a reasonable amount of blankets and pillows handy
  • Use a hamper or declutter your bedroom of dirty clothes and laundry
  • Check pockets of clothes for items
  • Organize under the bed and under bedside tables

Attic And Basement

  • Organize everything into storage bins
  • Put old furniture and large items to the back
  • Keep more frequently used items organized and easily accessible
  • Donate old unused items and clothing
  • Sort some items by season or event
  • Clear items off of stairs

Laundry Room

  • Declutter the top of washer and dryer
  • Organize laundry materials (detergent, dryer sheets, etc.)
  • Install or organize clothesline or drying bar

Home Office

  • Clear off your desk or workspace
  • Go through drawers and filing cabinets
  • Keep a reasonable amount of supplies handy
  • Set up your desk in a way that compliments your workflow
  • Organize computer cables and cords


After You Finish

  • Throw out, recycle or donate unneeded items
  • Do a quick check of each room
  • Take out the trash and recycling
  • Vacuum and mop floors
  • Consider purchasing a storage unit or roll away dumpster
